This course is run over two days.
Suitable for
everyone from the absolute beginner or passionate botanist to the experienced ceramicist and lover of flora.
The Workshop includes
Over two days Cathy will teach you a comprehensive range of techniques for creating botanical images on the clay surface including:

carving
-
sgraffito
-
water erosion
-
impressing, slip and underglaze inlay

stencils
-
sponge stamping and
-
slip trailing.
What you will learn
In this comprehensive course you will explore and practice various approaches to composition and mark making by integrating these techniques onto rolled slab tiles.
Cathy will encourage you to consider each botanical element in terms of its potential to create design motifs and stories in the vessels you want to create.
At the end of the course you will have several examples of ways to integrate botanical imagery into your surface designs that you can take home, fire and keep for future reference.
This is a unique opportunity to learn and develop your skills with a highly skilled ceramic artist who specialises in bringing awareness to Australian flora in her work.
About the convenor
Dr Cathy Franzi is an artist interested in representing Australian flora and the environments they inhabit in the ceramic medium. Her work is underpinned by research in the botanical sciences, natural history collections and fieldwork on location. She is currently in the exhibition ‘Art of Threatened Species’ at the Western Plains Cultural Centre in Dubbo. For this project she worked closely with a Senior Threatened Species Officer to investigate three orchid species in south western NSW. Cathy is an experienced tutor, teaching at the ANU, in community arts and workshops nationally. Her work is held in numerous public collections and she is represented by Sabbia Gallery in Sydney and Beaver Galleries in Canberra.
