This class is for young people aged 10 years and older or those 9+ with previous experience and an interest in learning to throw and create projects on the potter's wheel. If you are not sure if this class is right for your young person, please contact the Education Program Manager on 6241 1670 to discuss options.

New students will spend the term learning the fundamentals of how to prepare and centre their clay and create simple forms using the potter’s wheel. Continuing students will have the opportunity to refine their skills and start to develop a range of thrown items for glazing and using. Experienced tutors will assist both beginners and more experienced children and young people to build their skills. Students will also be encouraged to review their work and learn to critique and make decisions their work as their skills develop. Parents are welcome to enrol with their young person and share the fun. We recommend participants use an art journal or notebook to sketch and record their idea or add images so they can discuss their aims for the term with their teacher.

Prior experience with clay is an advantage.
Clay, glaze and firing are included. Canberra Potters will fire up to 10 pieces across the term for each enrolled child or young person as part of this course.

  • We recommend students bring a drink and snack.
  • Relaxed clothes and covered shoes are required.
