Julie Pennington

Julie Pennington is a ceramic artist based in Canberra. Her methodically crafted vessels and sculptural works are characterised by her distinctive and innovative approach to the enduring technique of coil building. Predominately Julie utilises the medium of porcelain, working slowly and methodically to investigate the subtleties and complexities of pattern and texture. This work is underpinned by Julie’s early experiences of textiles, drawing and printmaking. Julie’s career in the visual arts began in the field of Textile Design, before pursuing her interest in ceramics and completing a Diploma of Ceramics at Moss Vale TAFE in 2010. Since graduating Julie has undertaken artist residencies at Sturt Craft Centre, Mittagong NSW, Can Serrat Art Space in Barcelona, Spain, and Gunyah A.I.R, North Arm Cove NSW.

In 2016 Julie was awarded the Significant 3D Award in the Stanthorpe Art Award Qld, and was the winner of the Scott Brickworks Award in the North Queensland Biennial Ceramic Awards in 2018. Julie has been selected and invited to exhibit nationally and internationally and was recently featured in the publication Clay: Contemporary Ceramic Artisans by Amber Cresswell Bell.
