Dates and duration

3 day wheelthrowing course.
Saturday 7 March, Sunday 8 & Monday 9 March 2020 (Canberra Day Long Weekend).

Suitable for

Intermediate to advanced throwers (minimum skill level is to be able centre and pull up a cylinder without assistance).

The Workshop includes

Making a teapot is one of those landmark moments in learning pottery. Teapots are an exercise in learning about three dimensional design. Consideration of function, form, aesthetics and proportion are all vital to success of the final teapot. Join Chris Harford at Canberra Potters for three days of throwing bodies, spouts, lids, knobs and handles on the pottery wheel as he takes you through the process of making a teapot, and helps you create your own unique design.

What you will learn

Skillsets that will be a focus of this course:
  • the elements of teapot design
  • designing functional shapes
  • throwing spouts
  • making lids and galleries
  • making handles
  • trimming
  • fitting and assembling thrown pieces

Day 1

  • Discussion on form and function of the teapot and what to look at when
  • designing a teapot
  • The day will then be spent throwing the bodies and lids
  • Ongoing demonstration and discussion throughout the day.

Day 2

  • Trimming of bodies and lids.
  • Fitting of lids.
  • Preparation on body to receive the spout
  • Discussion on spouts and handles
  • Demonstration of throwing spouts, pulling spouts, pulling and hand making handles.

Day 3

  • Putting it all together
  • The finishing touches
  • Demonstration of glazing a teapot
Students can expect to work on 2 or 3 teapots over the course.

Students will need to bring

  • Your pottery toolkit
  • Batts if you work on batts. We have some that can be used in the workshop.
  • Plastic bags or similar (dry cleaning bags are good, they’re soft and light)
  • Camera/Smart Phone and notebook/art journal
  • Chris recommends you make a collection of pictures and drawings of teapot designs that interest you in your art journal to bring to the workshop.

About the teacher

Chris has been a professional potter for more than 30 years, establishing Spinning Gum Pottery in the ACT in 1996. He works in stoneware and porcelain clays and consistently wins awards for his tableware and teapots, most notably eight winning entries in major teapot shows since 2004.
His work is represented in public and private collections in Australia and overseas and he has conducted more than 40 workshops and lectures in Australia, the UK, Ireland and New Zealand.
