Description

Nine-week course for intermediate and advanced students

Refine your throwing skills and develop your own range of functional ware in this focused nine-week course with Canberra ceramicist Chris Harford.

Known for his beautifully resolved, high-fired porcelain and stoneware, Chris brings over 40 years of studio and teaching experience to this course. Students will work through the process of designing and producing a cohesive suite of wheel-thrown tableware—mugs, bowls, plates, jugs and serving pieces—with a strong emphasis on form, proportion, functionality and finish.

Throughout the term, Chris will guide participants through techniques for achieving consistency across sets, managing weight and scale, and considering surface treatment in relation to function and aesthetics. The course also includes discussion of production strategies, throwing efficiency, and thoughtful refinement of form at each stage of making.

This class is ideal for intermediate to advanced students who are confident centring and pulling up clay on the wheel and who are ready to build skill, confidence, and coherence in their ceramic practice.

Join pottery teacher and ceramicist Chris Harford for a focused nine-week course exploring the art of wheel-thrown tableware. Drawing on over four decades of studio experience, Chris brings a deep understanding of form, function, and glaze to this practical and engaging class.

Participants will refine their throwing skills while developing a cohesive range of functional forms—mugs, bowls, plates, and serving pieces—designed for everyday use. With an emphasis on technique, consistency, and personal design sensibility, this course is ideal for intermediate to advanced potters looking to expand their throwing practice with guidance from one of Canberra’s most respected potters.
