Clay Foundations: Wheel Basics

Are you ready to take your pottery skills to the next level? Our Clay Foundations – Wheel Basics course, focusing on beginner to intermediate throwing techniques, is designed to help you build a strong foundation in the art of wheel throwing. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to refine your skills, this course offers comprehensive guidance and hands-on practice to elevate your pottery experience.

Course Overview: In this course, you will develop essential throwing skills under the expert guidance of our experienced instructors. The course will cover a range of fundamental techniques, including throwing and trimming various forms such as mugs, bowls, vases, and cylindrical shapes. Each session is structured to gradually build your confidence and abilities, ensuring that you gain a solid understanding of the craft.

Skill Development: Throughout the course, you will learn to critique your work with a discerning eye, enabling you to identify areas for improvement and troubleshoot common throwing issues. Your instructor will provide personalised feedback, helping you refine your technique and overcome challenges. You will also explore a variety of decorative and finishing methods, such as glazing and adding handles, to enhance the final presentation of your pieces.

What You’ll Achieve: You will develop the skills necessary to create well-crafted pottery with confidence. You will be equipped to begin to produce functional and aesthetically pleasing pieces and will have the foundational knowledge to continue your journey in our advanced Continuing Clay courses.

Important Information

Course Details:

  • Duration: 9 weeks, 3 hours per session
  • Skill Level: Beginner to intermediate wheel throwing skills required
  • Materials: Clay, glaze and firing are an additional cost and can be paid through the shop or during class.
  • What to Bring:
    • Sturdy covered shoes
    • An apron
    • Your toolkit
    • An old towel or microfibre cloth

Studio Clean-Up: To maintain a safe and healthy environment, it is a requirement of class attendance that participants clean their workspaces and assist with the general clean-up of the workshop at the end of each class.

We ask that you keep our community safe by following all safety protocols and signage while on site. Your adherence to these guidelines ensures a productive and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

Terms and Conditions

Refund Policy – Classes & Short Courses:

  • Class fees will be refunded, less a 10% admin fee, if cancellation is notified more than 10 business days before the first class date.
  • If less than 10 business days’ notice is given then a refund, less 10%, will only be given if the place can be taken by another student otherwise the full fee is forfeited.
  • Please view your booking as a commitment to attend.
  • Classes cannot be transferred from one term to another or one year to another.
  • If a class is cancelled due to lack of enrolments, 100% of your class fee will be refunded.
  • All changes to bookings and refunds incur a 10% administration fee.
  • Canberra Potters will not issue refunds for missed classes or missed emails. Please ensure you have saved the following Canberra Potters emails to your contact list.
  • Canberra Potters is a teaching facility and students attend our classes to learn about pottery. Imperfect, broken and cracked items are part of the learning process. We do not provide refunds for work that cracks or breaks while drying, during firing or in general class activities.

Booking Policy

  • Canberra Potters does not offer make up classes.
  • Payment in full is required as the time of booking to secure a place.
  • CPS member discounts apply to course fees.
  • All bookings are made by accessing our website
  • All prices are subject to change.
  • Classes are run subject to numbers.
  • Once a class has commenced no refunds will be issued.

Member Discounts

  • Member discounts must be applied at time of booking classes online. We are unable to apply member discounts retrospectively.
