Description
Experience the drama and excitement of raku firing in this two-part workshop.
In the first session on 2 May participants will handbuild a small selection of forms using specialist raku clay. The focus will be on creating pieces that respond well to the raku process – considering shape, surface and structural strength. Work will then be dried and bisque fired by workshop staff in preparation for raku glazing.
In the second session on 23 May, participants will glaze their bisque-fired work and take part in a group raku firing. Together we will load the kiln, remove the glowing hot pieces, and place them into combustible materials to create the characteristic crackle and metallic effects that make raku so distinctive. The process is fast-paced and unpredictable, and no two results are ever the same.
This workshop is suitable for those with some clay experience, and more experienced makers alike.
Expect to take home up to two unique raku fired pieces per participant.
