Introduction to Clay: Discover the Art of Pottery
Our Introduction to Clay course is ideal for those new to the world of pottery, those interested in acquiring a new skill, or anyone seeking a refresher after time away from the craft. This course offers a comprehensive introduction, perfect for beginners or those looking to reconnect with the tactile and creative process of working with clay.
Over the span of nine weeks, you will spend three hours each week under the guidance of experienced tutors, who will teach you a range of essential techniques for working with clay.
Course Highlights:
- Explore Hand building: Gain an understanding of clay’s unique properties through various hand building techniques. You will work on projects that include pinch pots, coils, and slabs, providing a solid foundation in clay manipulation.
- Master the Potter’s Wheel: Focus on the basics of wheel throwing. You will learn to centre clay—an essential skill for all wheel-based pottery—before progressing to form cylinders and other simple shapes.
- Introduction to Glazing: Get acquainted with the glazing process using our selection of glazes. You will learn how to apply glazes effectively to enhance your finished pieces.
- Health and Safety: The course covers essential health and safety aspects of working with clay and pottery materials, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience.
- Toolkit: As part of the course, you will receive a pottery toolkit and an instruction booklet to support your learning journey.
Course Inclusions: Your course fee covers all necessary materials, including clay, glaze, a pottery toolkit, a techniques booklet, and the firing of up to 13 of your creations, allowing you to complete and take home your own pottery pieces.

Important Information
- Duration: Three hours per week for a nine-week term.
- Fees: Includes tuition, clay, a pottery toolkit, techniques booklet, studio access, and glazing and firing services.
- What to Bring: Please bring an apron, a large sponge or microfibre cloth and an old towel for cleaning up, wear sturdy enclosed shoes, tie back long hair, and leave any precious jewellery at home for safety.
- Studio Clean-Up: To maintain a safe and healthy environment, it is a requirement of class attendance that participants clean their workspaces and assist with the general clean-up of the workshop at the end of each class.
Terms and Conditions
Refund Policy – Classes & Short Courses:
- Class fees will be refunded, less a 10% admin fee, if cancellation is notified more than 10 business days before the first class date.
- If less than 10 business days’ notice is given then a refund, less 10%, will only be given if the place can be taken by another student otherwise the full fee is forfeited.
- Please view your booking as a commitment to attend.
- Classes cannot be transferred from one term to another or one year to another.
- If a class is cancelled due to lack of enrolments, 100% of your class fee will be refunded.
- All changes to bookings and refunds incur a 10% administration fee.
- Canberra Potters will not issue refunds for missed classes or missed emails. Please ensure you have saved the following Canberra Potters emails to your contact list.
- Canberra Potters is a teaching facility and students attend our classes to learn about pottery. Imperfect, broken and cracked items are part of the learning process. We do not provide refunds for work that cracks or breaks while drying, during firing or in general class activities.
Booking Policy
- Canberra Potters does not offer make up classes.
- Payment in full is required as the time of booking to secure a place.
- CPS member discounts apply to course fees.

- Once a class has commenced no refunds will be issued.

- Member discounts must be applied at time of booking classes online. We are unable to apply member discounts retrospectively.
