Based in Kyoto, Masaru Nishikawa is celebrated as one of Japan’s most renowned ceramicists, widely exhibited and collected. His imaginative, hand-built animal forms are instantly recognisable for their expressive, poetic and often playful qualities, brought to life through his use of colour, texture, and humour.

In his first solo exhibition in Australia, Nishikawa presents new works created during his 2025 artist residency at Canberra Potters, alongside a selection of recent pieces from Japan. As part of Canberra Potters’ 50th anniversary celebrations, Nishikawa hosted an exclusive, sold-out masterclass. During this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, participants learned his approaches to press mould casting, sculptural form, surface decoration, and the art of animating clay with humour and whimsy.
