About the convenor
Richilde is a Canberra based emerging artist working with ceramics. Material curiosity orientates Richilde’s practice: she is interested in using clay in a variety of ways to articulate and explore her surroundings. This process has resulted in experimental, gallery based projects, where ceramics are used in spatial installation informed by experience of the natural environment. Richilde also makes functional work under the name Girl Nomad Ceramics. https://girlnomadceramics.com/
As a teacher Richilde is especially interested in what the student wants from their time at Canberra Potters. Many people choose a pottery class to unwind and to do something tactile with their hands, others have a specific goal or project in mind. Richilde will facilitate a light hearted and exploratory class whatever a student’s aims.
Richilde received a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Ceramics) from the Australian National University in 2015. For her graduating work Richilde received several Emerging Artist Support Scheme (EASS) Awards, including the Craft ACT Exhibition award, the Strathnairn Arts Inaugural Anita McIntyre Exhibition and Residency award and the Canberra Potters’ Society Residency award.

Clay Foundations: Throwing cylinders
Workshop with Maryke Henderson
Dates and duration
Tuesday 28 January, Wednesday 29 & Thursday 30 January.
Suitable for
-
anyone who has completed the Wheel Basics class and can centre clay consistently.
-
anyone who wants to make lighter, lovelier pots.
The Workshop includes
Materials and firing not included.
What you will learn
Maryke is an expert at helping participants to refine their technique and make much better pots.
In this workshop she will talk about, and demonstrate, the skills required for preparing clay for throwing, making a cylinder and pulling up to get even walls and increased height in your cylinders.
Maryke will take you through a series of structured exercises in order to help you understand the form of your pots. The focus will be on improving your techniques and critiquing the quality of your forms.
The cylinder is the basic shape for many functional forms; mugs, jugs, vase forms, jars, teapots etc. By concentrating on throwing cylinders you will address any inherent issues in your throwing technique.
About the convenor
Maryke taught for many years in educational establishments, workshops and from her own studio when she lived in the New England region of NSW. After many years of professional potting, Maryke moved to Canberra and undertook full-time studies at the ANU School of Art, graduating in 2005. She has been teaching at Canberra Potters since 2003. The surface and the ability to create a finish that speaks of layering and aging has always fascinated Maryke. In her own practice, most of Maryke’s work is thrown, manipulated, altered and assembled. Soda-firing, where soda is added to a kiln at high temperature to create a glaze, enhances her beautifully-made forms.
