This course coincides with the opening of submissions for the 45th Anniversary Canberra Potters Cup Competition. More information about this competition will be available shortly.
Dates and duration
Sunday 1 and Sunday 15 March 2020.
Suitable for
intermediate and advanced potters, however it will not include slipcasting.
The Workshop includes
Different styles of cups serve different purposes. The perfect espresso cup is different from the ideal hot chocolate mug or your favourite mug for that first brew of the day. Each is unique in design and creation. The perfect cup is a personal and emotional decision and not all cups are equal!
In this course you will explore what is required to make a set of cups or mugs that are consistent in size, shape and design. You may wish to make a set of cups for home, for a gift or as a commission. Chris will help you to design a cup to meet a brief or a particular purpose and repeat it consistently to create beautiful, highly functional work. The focus will be on design and repetition making.
What you will learn
Day 1
Sunday 1 March: Designing a series of cups and / or mugs

- design principles of cups and mugs
- forms
- rims
- tips for repetition making
Students then have two weeks to practice their design and have at least 10 cups/mugs ready for adding handles and finishing.
Day 2
Sunday 15 March: Trimming, handles, finishing

- handles –
- what makes a good handle?
- how to repeat the same handle shape and size
- trimming –
- efficient trimming methods
- using chucks.
Students will need to bring
- Your notebook/journal
- Pics, drawings and ideas for your set of cups
- Your toolkit
- Your choice of clay (can be purchased during the workshop)
- A polystyrene broccoli box with a lid (or similar)
- A couple of newspapers (we have some here).
