About the Exhibition
Image: Steve Roper,
Graffitied Head, 2019
Opened 6.00pm Friday 16 October 2020 by Janet deBoos, Ceramic Artist and Honorary Senior Lecturer (ANU).
Floor talk 3.00pm Saturday 17 October 2020
Over the 10 years or so that Steve Roper has been working in clay, his work has revolved around the imagination, the subconscious, and expression. The face and head have featured prominently in this work. Roper’s more recent works reflect his interest in the raw expressive qualities of much art from Africa, the Pacific, South and Central America, with some earlier works influenced by cartoons and naïve art.
Roper uses handbuilding techniques to create his pieces, heavily working the surfaces by building up layers of slip, underglaze and found objects. He completes them with impressions and incising the surface of the clay.
This exhibition will run concurrently with Rob Linigen’s exhibition Lost and Found.
