About the teacher
Alex’s interest in medieval history is reflected in the forms and decorative techniques that he employs in his work. He uses sgraffito to decorate forms based on Byzantine pottery, although he uses stoneware clays for their strength, a result of working in Canada for a year. The other main technique that he uses is salt-firing where a glaze is formed by adding salt to a kiln at high (stoneware) temperatures. His liking for fantasy creatures is also reflected in the dragons and gargoyles that frequently form decorative or design elements of his work.
