Wheel Classes for Young Creatives (10+ years)

This class is designed for young people aged 10 years and older, or those 9+ with prior experience and a keen interest in learning to throw and create on the potter's wheel. If you’re unsure whether this class is the right fit for your child, please contact our Education Program Manager at 6241 1670 to explore your options.

What to Expect:

New students will focus on mastering the fundamentals of wheel throwing, from preparing and centring clay to crafting simple forms. Returning students will have the chance to refine their techniques and begin developing a variety of thrown pieces for glazing and practical use. Our experienced tutors are dedicated to supporting both beginners and more advanced students, helping them enhance their skills as they progress.

As their abilities grow, students will be encouraged to review and critique their work, fostering their decision-making skills in the creative process. We recommend that participants use an art journal or notebook to sketch ideas, record progress, and gather images to discuss with their teacher throughout the term.

All materials, including clay, glaze, and firing, are provided. Each child can have up to 10 pieces fired during the term as part of the course.

Parents are welcome to enrol alongside their child, making it a shared creative experience.

Important Details:

  • Experience: No prior experience is necessary. This class is open to school-aged children 10+ years. Children should be able to listen to teacher instruction and work with a degree of independence and autonomy in the supported class environment.
  • What to wear: Relaxed clothing and sturdy covered shoes are required. Long hair should be tied back, and precious jewellery should be left at home.
  • What to bring:  Children should bring a cleaning sponge and hand towel. We recommend that children bring a drink and snack.
  • Duration: 1.5 hours per week for a nine-week term.
  • Fees: Includes tuition, shared teaching resources and tools, clay, glazing and firing services.
  • Studio Clean-Up: To maintain a safe and healthy environment, it is a requirement of class attendance that participants clean their workspaces and assist with the general clean-up of the workshop at the end of each class.

For parents and carers supporting a child with identified additional needs:

  • Please arrange this in advance by contacting us at [email protected] so we can ensure reasonable adjustments can be implemented.
  • Attendance is subject to Canberra Potters' discretion, a current Working with Vulnerable People card, health & safety practices, and availability.

For health & safety reasons, children under 5 years are not permitted in the workshops.
