Handbuilding Vessels: Exploring Surfaces

A Nine-Week Pottery Course for Intermediate Potters and those with basic handbuilding skills.

Take your pottery skills to the next level by creating intricate handbuilt vessels and exploring the endless possibilities of surface decoration. In this nine-week course, you’ll learn how to create expressive, textured forms using techniques that bring both artistry and individuality to your work.

What you’ll Learn:

  • Surface Impressions: Create dynamic textures by using tools, stamps, and natural materials to add depth and character.
  • Laying Slabs: Build unique vessel forms with precision, from organic shapes to structured designs.
  • Surface Decoration: Experiment with layering slips, oxides, and glazes to achieve striking contrasts and finishes.
  • Glazing and Firing: Refine your pieces with a combination of matte and glossy finishes, creating functional and decorative works of art.

  • Explore how glazes and oxides interact with textured surfaces to create stunning effects.

Course Details:

  • Duration: 9 weeks, 3 hours per session
  • Skill Level: Intermediate. Basic handbuilding skills required
  • Materials: Clay, glaze and firing are an additional cost and can be paid through the shop or during class.
  • What to Bring:
    • Sturdy covered shoes
    • An apron
    • Your toolkit
    • An old towel or microfibre cloth

Studio Clean-Up: To maintain a safe and healthy environment, it is a requirement of class attendance that participants clean their workspaces and assist with the general clean-up of the workshop at the end of each class.
