Led by Lea Durie, this class offers space for deep consideration of the relationship between function, aesthetics and dining experience to craft beautiful tableware sets on the wheel.  A well designed and made set considers use, form, colour and material and elevates our enjoyment of dining to another level. In this short course you will learn the foundations to create your own bespoke breakfast set.

Description

This course will build on your existing wheel throwing skills to craft your own beautiful breakfast set of a bowl, cup and small plate.  You will learn about what makes a collection of objects a set and how to design and make your own personalised set.

Over the 4 weeks you will design and make your own individual tableware that you can test, refine and repeat.
You will learn how to apply design thinking to create your set, considering function, form, weight, size, material and decoration choices.
Over the 4 weeks you will learn to make perfectly formed bowls, small plates and cups on the wheel.  You will also learn how to create handles for your cups.

Week 1: 30 July – design principles, what makes a set, how to design your own setting.  Making a collection of cups, plates and bowls to test your design and refine your making.
Week 2: 13 August – Analysing and selecting your best pieces for finishing and how to make handles.
Week 3: 27 August – trimming, tidying and applying simple surface decorations
Week 4: 10 September – Surface decoration continues, and glazing.

Teacher Bio: Lea Durie is an artist working across ceramics, sculpture and installation, with a practice grounded in place, material exploration and embodied making. Drawing on walking, found clay and collected materials, her work explores relationships between people, landscape and environment through both functional objects and large-scale installations.

Notes:
This course is aimed at those with previous throwing experience eg. intermediate to advanced potters.

Bring your usual pottery tool kit:
- A mid softness rubber curved rib ( Yellow Mud or light blue walkers are perfect)
- Batts if you have them.
- A notebook and pencil

Important Information

This course is aimed at those with some experience eg. intermediate to advanced potters.
Duration: Three hours per week for 4 weeks.
Fees: Includes tuition and studio access. Clay and firing of 3 pieces is included in the course cost.
What to Bring:
- Bring your usual pottery tool kit,
- A mid softness rubber curved rib (Yellow Mud or light blue walkers are perfect)
- Batts if you have them.
- A notebook and pencil
-  Wear sturdy, covered shoes, tie back long hair, and leave any precious jewellery at home for safety. Bring an old towel and an apron.
Studio Clean-Up: To maintain a safe and healthy environment, it is a requirement of class attendance that participants clean their workspaces and assist with the general clean-up of the workshop at the end of each class.

Terms and Conditions

Refund Policy – Classes & Short Courses:

Class fees will be refunded, less a 10% admin fee, if cancellation is notified more than 10 business days before the first class date.
If less than 10 business days’ notice is given then a refund, less 10%, will only be given if the place can be taken by another student otherwise the full fee is forfeited.
Please view your booking as a commitment to attend.
Classes cannot be transferred from one term to another or one year to another.
If a class is cancelled due to lack of enrolments, 100% of your class fee will be refunded.
All changes to bookings and refunds incur a 10% administration fee.
Canberra Potters will not issue refunds for missed classes or missed emails. Please ensure you have saved the following Canberra Potters emails to your contact list.
Canberra Potters is a teaching facility and students attend our classes to learn about pottery. Imperfect, broken and cracked items are part of the learning process. We do not provide refunds for work that cracks or breaks while drying, during firing or in general class activities.
